MINISTRY PROGRAM OFFERS RECOVERING ADDICTS A BRIGHT FUTURE

By Allison Norlian CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) –

Hundreds of people who were headed down a dark path in life decided to turn their lives around by participating in a local program, organized by the New Life for Youth Ministry.   The program that began in Central Virginia has helped countless people get off the streets and turn their lives around for good for 40 years.   New Life For Youth helps people with troubles in life by providing them the opportunity to receive the vital skills that are necessary for a complete life change. The hundreds who participate each year and the thousands who have walked through the program live on the ministry’s ranch in Spotsylvania or in one of their residential homes in Richmond.   Those individuals also are fed, clothed and endure a strict schedule starting around 5:45 a.m. The program also employs the male participants at the Wash-N-Roll car wash in Chesterfield and the women at the thrift store across the street.

Rosalinda Rivera, the executive director for the New Life For Youth program, says the money made at these two locations goes back into the community and to support the program’s services.   “It helps us with our prevention programs, it helps us with our food bank,” Rivera said. “So if you come to our car wash, not only are you changing the lives of young guys, but a family of five is fed through our car wash.”   Rivera’s parents, Victor and Carmen Torres, founded the program. Torres, a former heroin addict, and gang member started the program 40 years ago to help people like the pastor who helped him.   Currently, New Life For Youth has over 100 participants for their program, which typically last for one year. It does cost money to join, but New Life For Youth will work with people who can’t afford the fee.
